In July 2015 we put free WiFi across Mamaia, and the password was a selfie of you kissing a bottle of Coca-Cola.
Summer 2015. Coca-Cola was celebrating 100 years of its contour bottle with #ShareAKiss and wanted it on the beach and online at the same time. Mamaia, Romania’s biggest Black Sea resort, had plenty of beach and very little internet. So we built a wireless network over it.
It was called Coca-Cola Free WiFi and ran on more than 60 antennas. There was no password to type. You took a selfie kissing a bottle of Coca-Cola and uploaded it from the login screen we designed and built, which said: “Parola de la Wifi e sărutul tău!” The WiFi password is your kiss.

Each photo was checked for a Coca-Cola bottle by “a mix of automatic and manual detection systems”, which is a polite way of saying some of the checking was done by people. Once a bottle was found, you were online straight away. Your selfie became a red “I’VE KISSED” card with your first name on it, and every upload went up on Coca-Cola Romania’s Facebook page.
